Testimonial – Aaron Benesh

I have had the pleasure of training under Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt Fabio Morescalchi for more than a year now. It takes only minutes to notice Fabio Morescalchi’s passion for the art of Jiu Jitsu and self defense. Fabio is a very talented BJJ practitioner with an unbelievably extensive amount of knowledge in the art of grappling. In my opinion Fabio’s coaching success is not due to his plethora of Jiu Jitsu knowledge but lies in his ability to communicate those ideas in an effective manner. He balances the outlooks of “attendance to detail” and “doing what works best for you and your body type and skill set” perfectly. My personal experience learning under Fabio showed great flexibility and communication on his part. Even though my home dojo isn’t Minnesota Kali Group (Fabio’s home gym), he willingly took me in to help me achieve my goal of earning a Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Drop-ins to his gym, private lessons, video study and sharing, and even making trips to my home dojo all showed great commitment and adaptability by Fabio. I absolutely recommend working with and learning from Fabio Morescalchi. As Fabio likes to say “Always Earned, Never Given.”

Fabio is generous with his time and instruction whenever I come home to Minnesota for a visit. I love checking up on how my extended BJJ family is doing and getting to train in the safe and supportive atmosphere he helps to create for his students –– an environment which, especially as a small female, I know is not always easy to find, especially for those trying out Jiu-Jitsu for the first time. Rolling with Fabio and his students is always fun. I find training with him to hold the balance between focused, playful, and technical that keeps me committed to Jiu-Jitsu, a practice which gives so much back to me in return. Fabio is a gentle teacher who is great to geek out on the details of techniques, while being down-to-earth (and also totally “down to roll”).

“Fabio is that rare type of coach who recognizes both the similarities and differences between beginner and advanced students, and the best ways to help everyone progress together. His emphasis on movement and structure, over flashy technique and hard rolling, sets him apart from many other instructors in the current climate of BJJ. I highly recommend Akagi for anyone interested in investigating BJJ as a system of self protection or martial art. Great instruction, great group.”

I have known Fabio for 7 years now and approached him at the MKG gym in Minnesota, Minneapolis for training in the grappling arts and groundwork. We hit it off immediately with his brilliant knowledge of the arts and first class teaching skill with a perfect sense of pace and patience.  Since then Fabio made a few trips to Canada to my training facility to teach seminars and give private tuition and he was instantly accepted and applauded by all students for his contribution. The result was a first class experience for all of us with up to date knowledge in Brazilian Jiujitsu, shoot wresting, Kali and related martial arts.  One thing I loved is his enthusiasm for martial arts and his tireless energy teaching and transferring knowledge to all levels of martial artists.I found it to be a very profound experience to be taught by and watch Fabio teach and would recommend his seminars and private classes to anyone interested in starting in the grappling arts and the more experienced martial artists. You wont regret it and you wont forget it.  ericyatesmartialarts.com

I started learning BJJ from Fabio as a white belt, with no grappling experience. His clear, concise, and technically clean instruction made it easy for me to build a strong fundamental understanding of BJJ. 7 years later, I am a one stripe brown belt competitor and Mixed Marital Artist at Brazilian Top Team, and I am confident to say Fabio’s coaching has been instrumental in my beginning knowledge of the art.

Fabio Morescalchi taught Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the students in our PREP summer program for blind teenagers.  He was a wonderful instructor.  His classes were informative, he put the students’ fears at rest, and he taught in a manner that was respectful to both men and women.  There was no problem with the fact that our students were blind; he treated them like normal people.  We recommend him highly as an instructor and as a friend.  –

Fabio has a wide variety of tools and techniques that he uses, which makes his jiu jitsu highly adaptable to situations and hard to work against.
He has a great attention to detail while teaching and teaches in a way that is easy to follow. He is great at pushing you to see your potential, all the while, making a fun and playful environment to learn and train in. Fabio has been a great training partner for me to work with and bounce ideas off of. I would highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for a good jiu jitsu coach.

I can’t say enough great things about Fabio as a teacher.

He’s a Jiu Jitsu geek who gets excited over all the small and important details you need in order to have a tight game. This attitude goes into how he teaches and translates into a whole room of Jiu Jitsu students getting excited to learn and grow.

Never a dull moment. Fabio has been a great mentor to me and he is a shining example of what it means to be a leader.

Great instructor and coach!

Fabio has been teaching and training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for over twenty years and his enthusiasm and commitment to the sport really come through in his teaching.

I started training at Minnesota Kali Group where Fabio is head coach of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program as someone completely new to martial arts and have learned so much since I started. Fabio has encouraged me from the beginning to learn, have fun, and challenge myself in Jiu Jitsu. Classes are fun and make learning accessible and noncompetitive.

Fabio is very invested in helping his students develop and is always looking for ways to help students improve from organizing and teaching seminars and open mats, to encouraging students to train together and share what they know, to regularly putting in extra time outside of class to practice and answer questions.

Walking into my first BJJ class was one of the most intimidating things I’ve ever done. I really didn’t know what to expect and it had been 20+ years since I had done any type of grappling. I’ve trained a little in other disciplines over the years but this was different. In my mind this was the sport where you have to get down on the mat and get put in some really uncomfortable positions by someone that could severely injure you in the blink of an eye! I was nervous and worried that I would look like a fool. It turns out I was worried over nothing and I really didn’t understand the sport at all!

As I mentioned I was really nervous and intimidated to step into my first class. The second Fabio started his class that all went away. You can tell that he’s trained a lot of people over the years. He has a very relaxed attitude and has a way of making you feel comfortable in the class. He knows when to push you and when it’s time to take a break. He knows when you’re picking up on the techniques and when you’re not, all by just observing. If he notices you struggling he has a subtle way of working himself in with you so you don’t feel singled out. I’ve had teachers/coaches in the past that get frustrated very quickly when you don’t understand their methods of teaching, this is not the case with Fabio.

Fabio stays calm and he takes the time to go over the movements so that you can capture what he’s demonstrating. He’ll go over the techniques from many angles so the entire class can see and ask questions. After he demonstrates a technique he’s more than willing to check up with everyone to make sure they’re performing it correctly. He works the movements enough so that you’ll retain them but not too much where you’re burnt out. Some of the moves can seem very complicated but Fabio makes sure that you understand them by building the technique from the ground up. I personally thought that I’d never understand some of the moves after my first 15 minutes and was laughing about how easy they had become to me after the class was over.

It’s very clear that Fabio is very knowledgeable and has a lot of training experience. His methods are top notch and so is his attitude. He’s very friendly and approachable. He’s the kind of guy you meet and after 10 minutes you feel like you’ve known him your entire life. He’s very passionate about BJJ and it shows. I’ve learned a lot from him and I hope I get several more opportunities to train with him over many years to come.

Akagi Jiu Jitsu
The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program at Minnesota Kali Group is headed by Fabio Morescalchi of Akagi Jiu-Jitsu and co-instructors Joe Swore and John Dornick. I have been training there for a year and half about 2-3 times a week and strongly recommend the program to anyone looking to train BJJ in Minneapolis.
The school is located on Chicago a few blocks off of I35W and Crosstown. The fees are very affordable and flexible (no mandatory yearly contract) and the atmosphere laid back though you will work hard to earn your stripes – literally and figuratively. The coaching there is top notch.
Coach Morescalchi is dedicated to the art and to making his students better. He has been training for 24 years in Jiu-Jitsu and is a Judo brown belt as well. The BJJ program’s lineage can be traced through Chris McCune – Fabio Morescalchi’s coach – who is a 2nd degree black belt under Rigan Machado. Whether you’re a total beginner or have been training for several years; are looking to compete or like me just take classes, have fun and get in shape, there is something for everyone there.
Coaches Morescalchi, Swore and Dornick have different games, so whether you’re a smaller and athletic player who likes to move a lot or have a larger build and favor a pressure game, you will find what you are looking for there. Also, the program regularly host great seminars (Jeff Glover, Tom Oberhue, Mike Ellefson, Chris Haueter, Chris McCune…) as well as visit or host rolling sessions with our cousin schools in the area. Stop by for a free class anytime, everyone there is always eager to welcome new students.
See you on the mat!
